Chanel is arguably the most iconic fashion brand in the world, but will it stay that way?
Founded in Paris in 1910 by Coco Chanel, the brand has been a symbol of class and timeless elegance both in and beyond the fashion industry. While fashion often revolves around trends, Chanel has stayed true to its roots. The brand’s collections often feature attire that resembles early designs by Coco herself.
In 1983, the legendary Karl Lagerfeld became creative director of Chanel and he held that position until his death in 2019. Lagerfeld managed to modernize the brand while maintaining its classic structure. After his passing, Virginie Viard – who began interning under Lagerfeld in 1987 – became creative director.
Viard has faced a decent amount of criticism from her peers in the fashion industry. During Viard’s five-year tenure as creative director at Chanel, she stuck to a simple formula. Her designs had little variety and were labeled as unoriginal and a failed attempt to copy Lagerfeld’s blueprint. Viard stepped down in 2024 and Mathieu Blazy was appointed as the new creative director.
Blazy graduated from La Cambre, a famous arts school, and then worked for Calvin Klein, Celine, and Bottega Veneta. Blazy was creative director for Bottega Veneta for three years before moving to Chanel. While Blazy was named the creative director of Chanel in December of 2024, his first collection with the brand did not debut until October 6, 2025 for the spring/summer ‘26 collection. In his first collection with the brand, Blazy did quite the opposite of his predecessor Viard.
Blazy completely separated his new collection from classic Chanel. Not only did he follow modern trends and show similar designs to other brands, but classic designs like Chanel suits or pearl necklaces were nowhere to be found.
The spring/summer ‘26 collection featured bold headpieces and jewelry (especially necklaces), sheer fabrics, and dramatic layering. Many looks were oversized and slouchy, which historically is not a Chanel look.
Blazy did leave a little something for fans of what has now become vintage Chanel.
Almost all of the shoes in the new collection featured the classic two-tone design with a black toe. This design has stood the test of time. The two-toned Chanel pump, released in 1957, was the brand’s first ever shoe.
There is no doubt that Blazy has taken his first steps toward revolutionizing Chanel. However, his shoe homage to the roots of the brand makes this reporter think Chanel will retain its status as one of the most iconic brands.
