Star U.S soccer player Trinity Rodman recently signed a contract worth more money than any other female athlete to play in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) ever. Her contract contributes to a step forward in women’s soccer and sports. It signals more investment, respect, and confidence in female athletes and women’s sports in general.
Trinity Rodman plays for the United States Women’s National team (USWNT) as well as the NWSL club team, the Washington Spirit. She was the youngest draft pick in NWSL history in 2021, at 18 years of age. In 2021, she won the NWSL Rookie of the Year, the NWSL championship with the Washington Spirit, and the U.S Soccer Young Female Player of the Year. The highest accolade in her career includes winning a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics with the USWNT.
In January of 2026, she became the highest-paid player in NWSL history. She signed a record-breaking three-year contract with the Washington Spirit, reportedly worth over $2 million annually, including bonus, according to her agent, Mike Senkowski. This new contract lets her remain in the club through the 2028 season.
Originally, Washington and Rodman reached an agreement in late November of 2025 to a four-year contract that “annualized” to over $1 million yearly. Unfortunately, league commissioner Jessica Berman denied the deal, claiming it violated the “spirit” of the rules. Rodman was also accused of preemptive salary cap circumvention by the league. Preemptive salary cap circumvention is classified as actions taken by a team to secretly or illegally pay a player outside the salary cap or hide contract details. Rodman and the Washington Spirit denied these claims.
The NWSLPA- National Women’s Soccer League Players Association who are the officially recognized union of players in the NWSL, founded in 2017; decided to “file a grievance against the league on Rodman’s behalf. According to an article by the Entertainment and Sport Programming Network (ESPN), the union called the NWSL’s intervention on a legal contract offer a “flagrant violation” of the player’s free agency and a violation of at least five sections of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).”
As a result, the NWSL created the High Impact Player Rule in December of 2025 to accommodate Rodman’s newest record-breaking deal. The High Impact Player Rule allows teams to apply additional funding to one player or split across multiple qualifying signings but the combined cap hit must meet a maximum threshold. Eligibility for this is based on a mix of on-field achievements and commercial profile, which includes international honours, league awards, and involvement in the national team of a player’s country.
Trinity Rodman’s contract is such a crucial step forward in women’s soccer and women’s sports in general. This contract signals more investment, respect, and confidence in women athletes and their respected teams. This deal pushes growth in true equity between male and female athletes. Ultimately, this wasn’t just a personal gain for Rodman- but also a gain for the future of women’s sports as a whole.
